Gives tabular and graphical data (with English captions) on the growth and biomass of 5-year-old stands of these species in Shikoku. The estimated dry-matter production for both species was ca. 10 t/ha/year; this value is considerably lower than the value of 30 t/ha/year for a 5-year-old A. mollissima [A. mearnsii] stand given by Tadaki [cf. FA 30, 4397] and that of 17-30 t/ha/year for a 4-year-old A. dealbata stand given by Fujimori and Yamamoto [cf. FA 29, 2062]. The amounts of foliage recorded (2-3 t/ha for A. mollissima and 3 t/ha for A. dealbata) were markedly less than those previously recorded. The net assimilation rate per ton of leaves for both species was the same as that recorded for A. mollissima by Tadaki but less than that recorded for A. dealbata by Fujimori and Yamamoto. It is therefore concluded that the lower net production is attributable to the smaller amount of foliage in A. mollissima and to both the smaller amount of leaves and lower net assimilation rate in A. dealbata. Annual stemwood production per ton of leaves was 3.5 - 3.7 m3 (1.9-2.0 t) for A. mollissima and 3.6-4.4 m3 (1.5-1.7 t) for A. dealbata. |
