A study was conducted to estimate the variability and genetic parameters for the development of cultivars with more frost resistant in Coffea arabica progenies, carrying C. liberica var. dewevrei genes. A genetic variability for frost resistance was observed among the progenies with C. liberica var. dewevrei genes. Rust [Hemileia vastatrix] resistance, vegetative vigour and yield potential should be considered when developing cultivars adapted to frost occurrence areas. Cultivars with yield precocity such as IAPAR 59, allowed a faster yield recovery after a severe frost, thus minimizing the damage from the phenomenon. The use of index selection is efficient to select simultaneously progenies with greater frost adaptation, vegetative vigour, rust resistance and yield.. |
