Abstract: Changes in the number of ewes per ram from 50 to 210 had no effects on ewe fertility. Groups of three rams were joined with 150, 300, or 450 and with 210, 420, and 630 ewes respectively in two experiments. Rams were 2½ and 3½ years of age and were mated with ewes 2½?5½ years of age. Within experiments there was no difference between mating groups in the percentage of ewes mated, recorded at intervals throughout the mating period. As the number of ewes per ram increased the number of ewes mated by each ram also increased, although there was a significant decline in the mean number of rams mating each ewe. Approximately 81% of ewes lambed to first mating in both experiments. In experiments 1 and 2 respectively conception rates were 7.2 and 9.6% lower in ewes mated by one ram only than in ewes mated by two or three rams (P < 0.05 and < 0.01). |
