The present work evaluates biofilm formation during nitrification of a synthetic saline waste in an aerated submerged biological filter. The support material for biofim development was made of PVC wrinkled plates with large specific area and high porosity. When the system operated without NaCl, it was possible to detect, in the firts week, a brown biofil on the support surface. Electronic microscopy observation showed dense formations and microbiologic assays presented typical microflora. The experiments using 25 and 35 g/L NaCl showed changes in the biofilm behaviour. As the salt concentration increased, the microflora attachment on the support surface decreased. also, periodic analysis of ammonium-N, nitrite-N, nitrate-N and pH demonstrated that high saline concentrations strongly inhibits the nitrification process, leading to a reduction of almost 30% in the ammonium removal rate. |
