The behavior of Criollo type goats grazing irrigated ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) pastures was studied at the Animal Research Station of Carbo, Sonora, Mexico. The experiment consisted of two phases with one on drylot and the other on pasture. In the first phase free rotational grazing with 52 goats/ha was compared to controlled grazing plus supplementation (cottonseed hulls 85 percent, sugar cane molasses 14 percent, urea 1 percent) with 120 goats/ha. On the second phase two feeding types were evaluated in corral: a) ryegrass harvested and offered at manger plus supplementation and b) supplementation ad libitum. The milk production/animal/day on the first phase was statistically superior with 0.810 kg for free rotational grazing compared to 0.540 kg for the controlled grazing + supplement. The milk production/day/ha was superior on the second treatment, due to the higher number of animals/ha (64.8 vs 42 kg). On the second phase the milk production of 0.470 kg/animal/day for ryegrass harvested + supplement was statistically superior to the treatment where supplement alone was offered with 0.320 kg. Dry matter consumption/animal/day was 1.03 kg ryegrass and 1.5 kg of supplement equal to 6.0 percent consumption in relation to the body weight. The average feed consumption/animal/day was 2.63 kg for the treatment where supplement alone was offered and equivalent to 7.12 percent in relation to body weight. |
