Abstract: Udders of 32 young and adult Sokoto Red and Kano Brown breeds of goats, 27 of which showed clinical chronic mastitis, were examined both clinically in the live animal and at necropsy for pathological changes. Examination included physical observation of the udders and their contents, gross and histological examination of the gland and teat cisterns (sinuses) and their associated parenchymatous tissues. Milk from some of the goats (n = 23) was bacteriologically examined. The most significant gross findings in the mastitic goats included enlarged pendulous udders the gland and teat cisterns of which were filled with milk of varied features. The contents varied from thick creamy or brownish milk to thin watery or opaque fluid. The glandular parenchymatous tissues were generally reduced in size, firm in consistency and areas of induration were often felt when the tissues were palpated. Various species of bacteria were cultured from the milk samples and these included Staphylococcus aureus which was the most common isolate, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Pseudomonas spp. The histopathologic changes in the parenchymatous glandular tissue of the mastitic goats ranged from subacute through mild chronic inflammation to severe atrophy and fibrosis often associated with sparse round cellular infiltration. The walls of the teat and gland cisterns were thin and the inner lining epithelial cells in some areas were flattened and elongated. |
