The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of soil compaction and the alleviation thereof by deep ploughing in established orange orchards, on Yield and fruit size. The experiment was conducted at the Addo Research Station in the Eastern Cape. Ploughing to a depth of 800 mm at approximately 1 m from tree sterms was compared with non-ploughing controls in a relatively low yielding mature 'Palmer' navelorchard, with 'Florida' rough lomon as rootstock. Ploughing was applied to one side of the tree rows in April 1990 and on the other side in August 1991. Unploughed treatments showed resistence to penetration values of above 2000 kPa at a soil depthof 2000 mm, as measured with a penetrometer. |
